As a member of “The Squad,” Democrat congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, is no stranger to controversial comments that have drawn the wrong kind of attention from the media and the general public.
Recently, the Mogadishu-born politician has been receiving flak for her radical comparison between the United States and terror groups Hamas and Taliban.
On her twitter account, she posted a message that shocked many Americans.
“We must have the same level of accountability and justice for all victims of crimes against humanity. We have seen unthinkable atrocities committed by the U.S., Hamas, Israel, Afghanistan, and the Taliban. I asked @SecBlinken where people are supposed to go for justice,” Omar stated.
A group of Jewish Democrats led by Rep. Brad Schneider, crafted a statement letter, putting pressure on Omar, to clarify her harmful comments.
“Equating the United States and Israel to Hamas and the Taliban is as offensive as it is misguided. Ignoring the differences between democracies governed by the rule of law and contemptible organizations that engage in terrorism at best discredits one’s intended argument and at worst reflects deep-seated prejudice,” the statement elaborated.
“The United States and Israel are imperfect and, like all democracies, at times deserving of critique, but false equivalencies give cover to terrorist groups. We urge Congresswoman Omar to clarify her words placing the U.S. and Israel in the same category as Hamas and the Taliban,” the House Democrats added.
Along with Brad Schneider, the group of lawmakers are Kim Schrier, Brad Sherman, Jake Auchincloss, Ted Deutch, Lois Frankel, Dean Phillips, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Elaine Luria, Kathy Manning, Josh Gottheimer and Jerrold Nadler.
As expected, the feisty congresswoman retorted against her Democrat comrades.
“It’s shameful for colleagues who call me when they need my support to now put out a statement asking for ‘clarification’ and not just call,” Omar said.
“The Islamophobic tropes in this statement are offensive. The constant harassment and silencing from the signers of this letter is unbearable,” Omar added.
She also stated that “citing an open case against Israel, U.S., Hamas and Taliban in the ICC isn’t comparison or from ‘deeply seated prejudice.’ You might try to undermine these investigations or deny justice to their victims, but history has taught us that the truth can’t be hidden or silenced forever.”
Like her fellow Dems mentioned in their statement, America, just like Israel, is not a perfect country. The United States may have committed mistakes in the past, especially when we bombed Yemen during Obama’s time, but it is wrong to compare our freedom-loving nation to barbaric terrorist organizations like the Taliban and Hamas.
